Lay Servant School, March 4-5

The 2017 Winter Lay Servant School for the Walterboro District will be held on March 4-5 at Carteret St. United Methodist Church at 408 Carteret St., Beaufort, SC 29902Classes will start on Saturday at 8 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m.  Sunday classes will start at 2 p.m. and conclude with graduation and worship ending at 6:30 p.m. Lunch will be furnished on Saturday, a light lunch will be served at 1 p.m. at Wesley UMC at 810 Duke St. in Beaufort on Sunday and snacks will be provided both days.

The registration deadline for the Winter Lay Servant School is February 10, 2017. Class sizes are limited, so those wishing to attend should not delay. To receive a refund, we must be notified by the deadline. Registration cannot be carried forward to a future course. We must have a minimum of 50 registrations by February 10 or school will be cancelled.  Please note that books/materials are ordered and instructor schedules are set based on the registration deadline. Your cooperation is imperative in allowing us to properly plan for your optimal learning experience.

Individuals new to the Lay Servant School are encouraged to take the Basic course first followed by the Methodist Heritage.

Applicants should complete a registration form (download here) and send it with a $45.00 check or money order made payable to UMC Conference Treasurer to cover the cost of materials and meals. The check should be mailed to:  Jackie Williams, Communications Co-Coordinator, PO Box 131, Walterboro, SC 29488. Please feel free to call Mrs. Jackie Williams at 843-538-3807 or  Ms. Queen Trappier at 843-871-4332 who will be assisting with registration.

Bluffton-Okatie Community Lenten Services starting Wednesday, March 1

communitylentenservices02sqPresbyterian, Lutheran, United Methodist, and A.M.E. churches in the greater Bluffton – Okatie area will gather together at noon each Wednesday, March 5 to April 5, in the season of Lent for worship and fellowship.

A guest pastor from the area will share the message during the 30-minute service. Offerings received as part of the service will support missions and ministries selected by the host church. Following the worship service, a light luncheon will be offered so that additional fellowship may be experienced. “These services offer people an opportunity to worship with each other in different locations and to hear different pastors from the community.” says Pastor Pete Berntson, of Church of the Palms, one of the organizers of this series.

The first service is Ash Wednesday, March 1, at Lowcountry Presbyterian, with the Rev. Chris Herrin serving as the host pastor. Rev. Rick Klotz, Pastor at Lord of Life Lutheran, will be the guest proclaimer. This service will include the imposition of ashes.

On Wednesday, March 8, the service is at St. Luke’s UMC, with the Rev. Richard Smith, welcoming guest pastor, the Rev. Dr. Jon Black from Campbell Chapel, A.M.E.

On Wednesday, March 15, the service is at Lord of Life Lutheran, with the Rev. Rick Klotz welcoming guest pastor, the Rev. Joey McDonald from Bluffton UMC.

On Wednesday, March 22, the service is at Campbell Chapel A.M.E with the Rev. Dr. Jon Black welcoming the Rev. Daniel Burbage, St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, Bluffton campus.

On Wednesday, March 29, the service is at St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, Bluffton Campus with the Rev. Daniel Burbage welcoming Rev. Sam Joyner of Grace Coastal, Presbyterian.

Finally, on Wednesday, April 5, the service is at Bluffton UMC with the Rev. Joey McDonald welcoming guest pastor the Rev. Chris Herrin, of Lowcountry Presbyterian.

Rome VBS FunShop, March 18

It’s Official!

Church of the Palms, in Okatie, will host a Group VBS FunShop event on Saturday, March 18, from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  “Rome: Paul and the Underground Church.” will be the them of this FunShop

FunShop events offer hands-on training that gives practical pointers on everything from fundraising and recruiting to decorating and cleanup. Participants will be able to network with other church’s, receive step-by-step instructions to create amazing decorations and ultimately engage in an actual  “Day at VBS.”

Come discover time-saving and budget-stretching tips from Group VBS veterans. Bring all your key leaders and be prepared to learn planning and coordinating strategies and effective family follow-up.

Additionally, these networking sessions help you and your church to connect and share ideas, props and decorating resources with other churches in your area. Finally, you will receive an exclusive FunShop gift and jumpstart your VBS season to make this VBS, your best VBS ever!
